Insite is located on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Canada.

It has been estimated that Vancouver is home to about 12,000 injection drug users, with more than one-third living in the Downtown Eastside.

For many injection drug users living in the Downtown Eastside, housing is either very unstable or nonexistent.

Why do we provide services in this neighbourhood? Having a safe and clean place to inject drugs serves four distinct, but overlapping purposes:

1. It keeps people from transmitting infectious diseases.
2. It provides the opportunity to form relationships and encourage marginalized people to access health care services, including primary care and addiction treatment.
3. It brings stability to the community by improving public order and reducing the number of injections taking place on the street.
4. It stabilizes people's health.
